In the willow-meads of Tasarinan I walked in the Spring.Īh! the sight and the smell of the Spring in Nan-tasarion! ![]() The magnificence of the willows contrasts with her small figure, she wears humble clothes and poor armour in the colors of the earth, all that she could save from the sack, yet there is no need of armour here where the blessing of Ulmo keeps danger away Treebeard’s Song: in the Willow meads of Tasarinan This elf is one of said refugees, exploring the region who was said to heal body and spirit. Following the sack of the city the refugees came to Tasarinan and stayed there several years, until Tuor brought them on to the Mouths of Sirion. Its beauty caused Tuor to tarry there longer than Ulmo had thought, only leaving when the Vala appeared to him directly and order him to seek Gondolin. ![]() In the earliest versions of the Legendarium, in the “Fall of Gondolin” chapter the Land of Willows is located in the same place as in the later geography of Beleriand, but Tuor visits it before, as well as after, his life in Gondolin. In the late Third Age, Treebeard remembered Nan-tathren and sang about “The willow-meads of Tasarinan” to Merry and Pippin. There was awakened the sea-longing of Tuor and his son Eärendil, this event was the first of a chain who would lead to the War of Wrath and the end of The First Age, and of Beleriand. They were healed of their wounds and sorrows by Ulmo’s power, its presence strong in the River Sirion. Another detail about this region is given in these early version of the tales: the Land of Willows is said to be the place were butterflies of all kinds came into the world, and they remained common there during the First Age.Īfter the destruction of Gondolin in late First Age, The survivors led by Tuor rested in Nan-tathren for a while on their journey south from their city’s ruin. This region played a little but very important part in the history of Arda, and it was said to be inhabited by Ents. It was famous for its willows and flowered meadows, but aside the rich flora, the land was desolate. Nan-tathren is the sindarin name, meaning “vale of willows” or “land of willows”, the Quenya name is Tasarinan or Nan-tasarion, meaning “willow-vale”. It was located where the River Narog met the great River Sirion, to the north of the Mouths of Sirion. Nan-tathren or the “Land of Willows” was a region of Beleriand.
